KIBALE NATIONAL PARK - Home to 13 primatesspecies
Kibale National park is one the most accessible moist evergreen rainforest in Uganda. It has an elevation of 1110m-1590m above sea level. It is located in the West of Uganda, in the districts of Kabarole and Kibale, with a size of 776 sq km, and adjoins Queen Elizabeth National Park.
The park was created in 1993,and treasured of its Flora and Fauna.
The park boasts of over 60 mammal species, 335 bird species, 315 tree species, which makes it an important Eco-Tourism and safari Destination.
Kibale National park is a home of 13 primates including Red colobus and L’hoest’s monkeys, baboons, with the major attraction being the Chimpanzees where there is about 1450 chimpanzees. These Apes are so beautiful to watch as they squibble and pray in the fruit trees.
Other mammals include the elephants which are smaller and hairier than their counterparts in the savanna, antelopes, bushpigs, buffallos, leopard, giant forest hog.
Bird species include 6 species that are endemic to the Albertain Rift Region, namely; Black-capped apalis, blue headed sunbird, collared apalis, dusty crimson wing, purple-breasted sunbird and red faced woodland warbler.
The park has diverse flora which is supported by the wet tropical forest which range from moist evergreen forest, moist semi deciduous (77%) to grassland and swamps (23%).
The area has two dry periods, November-February and June-September which the suitable periods to visit the park though one can still visit in the other months which are rainy.
The area in mainly inhabited by two tribes. The Batooro who are the natives and Bakiga who migrated from the densely populated areas of South West Uganda.
Activities in the park include primate walks, where chimpanzee tracking is the most interesting adventure, Forest hikes, where botanists get chance of looking at different tree species, birding especially in Bigodi wetland sanctuary, children’s activities, night walks, Etc.
