KIDEPO NATIONAL PARK IN NORT EASTERN UGANDA

Kidepo National Park is one of the most spectacular park in Uganda, with strong wilderness, rugged mountain scenery and exceptional game viewing and bird watching.
The park is located in the North East corner of Uganda, bordering Sudan and Kenya, with an altitude range of 914m and 2750m above sea level, with a size of 1,442 sq km.

The park, established in 1960 is found in Karamoja region and is dominated by 2750m of Mt. Morangole and transected by River Narus in the South.
Kidepo is a semi-arid, but with expansive grassy plains dotted with big rocky outcrops and flanked by steep jagged mountains.

The perennial water makes the park an oasis.
The park is habited with semi-desert scrub, open thorn-bush, long and short-grass open tree savanna, riparian woodland including Borassus and kigelia woodland, thick, “miombo-like” woodland, montane forest and granite out-crops.

Kidepo National Park has over 80 mammal species including 28 species that are not found in any other national park in Uganda, for instance Bat-eared fox, carcal, cheetah, and klipspringer. Other large mammals include elephant, common Zebra Buffalo, reedbuck, waterbuck,spotted hyenas ,leopard, tree climbing lion, bush pig.

The park has also over 465 bird species most interesting of which include Ostrich, Kori bustard which are associated with arid areas. Other bird species include silver bird, small of yellow-billed shrike which frequent the thorn trees, which are well viewed from Apoka Rest camp and park Headquarters overlooking the swallow, southern Narus valley.

Activities in the camp include camp drive, where one gets opportunity to see different animals, birdwatching,game viewing.
One can also visit the Kalamajong homes and get a chance to see manyatas art craft like stools, beads, spears, and kraals.
