MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK

Murchison falls national park is the largest protected national park, located in Uganda Toursthe North West of Uganda, with the size of 3840 sq km, and is bisected by the Victoria Nile from the east to west, covering a distance of 115km.


The park is largely dominated by savanna woodland, river/wetland and tropical forest, which attracts various animal and bird species as well as variety of tree species.
Gazetted in 1952,the park was named after the Murchison falls, which is the point where the world’s longest river explodes violently through a narrow rift valley and plunges into a frothing pool of 43m below.


Rabongo and kaniyo pabidi forest which covers a big part in the south east of the park, covering an area of 8km is a home to various animals especially primates like chimpanzee, colobus monkeys and a wide variety of bird species.


Murchison Falls boasts of over 76 mammal species, and over 460 bird species which are found in the River Nile and Rabongo forest which form part of the Murchison fall national park.


Animals in the park include;

Lion, elephant, buffalo, chimps,waterbird, hippos,crocodile,giraffe, leopard, antelopes. Bird species in the park include the dazzling variety of waterbirds such as the African Fish Eagle, African Skimmer and the rare shoebill stork which can easily be seen at the banks of the river. Other bird species that can be seen include Silver Bird, Blue-napped Mouse birds, Grey-crowned Crane, Bluff-bellied Warblers, Goliath Heron, Black-headed Batis, Black-headed Gonolek, Green-winged Ptyilia, Chestnut-crowned Sparrow-weaver, Long-toed Plover, Vitelline Masked Weaver, Saddle-billed Stork, Spotted Mourning Thrush, Spotted and Verreaux’s Owls, Long-tailed and Pennant-winged Nightjars, standard-winged Nightjar, White-backed Night Heron and Pel’s Fishing Owl.


There are various activities on the park which include;
Game drives, where you will see plenty of game on the Buligi, Albert and Queen's tracks north of the River Nile. At Nyamusika Cliffs you can picnic, enjoy the view and watch elephants and other game on the grassy hillsides.


Launch cruise on the Nile, which involve trip cruising in the boat in the nile, where you get a chance to see various birds, and water animals like Hippos and crocodiles are abundant and you will see elephants, buffaloes, waterbucks Birds like herons, cormorants, ducks, bee-eaters, fish eagles kingfishers and sometimes the rare shoebill will be seen.


Nature walks, which offers opportunity to explore the wild on foot. Animals, birds and plants can be closely and quietly observed. Nature walks are offered at Rabongo Forest, Top of the falls and Kaniyo Pabidi in Budongo Forest


Sport fishing, which can is done on the Nile. Tiger fish, Nile perch can be caught. However,this is done on special arrangement.


The park offers beautiful accommodation which range from budget, luxury and mid-range which are all spaciously home away from home hospitable.
