RWENZORI NATIONAL PARK
Rwenzori national park is one of the adventurous national parks in Uganda.
Located in the South Western part of Uganda, bordering Democratic republic of Congo, the park has a size of 996 sq km, and covers a large part of Rwenzori chain of mountains, with the highest peak being Margharita (5109m),third highest in Africa.
Other peaks are Alexandra (5083m), Mount speke (4890m), Mount Emin (4791m), Mount Gessi (4715m) and Mount Luigi da Savioa (4627m).
The park was named after Rwenzori mountain, and was established in 1991 and was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1994 because of its outstanding natural beauty.
The peaks are all glaciated, and have many water falls and lakes which all add on the beauty of the park.
Rwenzori mountain is primarily know for its challenging hiking and climbing possibilities, where only physically fit individuals can succeed to reach the top, and always count it a remarkable achievement when they reach the top glaciers.
The Rwenzori range is divided into several altitude zones, each with different microclimate and flora and fauna.
Rwenzori mountains is unique in East Africa because it is the only mountain which is not as a result of volcanic origin, but only raises from the rift valley flow.
The park has a bio diversity of flora and fauna, with over 70 mammal species, 177 bird species and several plant and tree species, most of which is endemic to the albertain rift valley.
Some of the animal species often encountered at the park include; Colobus and blue monkeys, elephant, golden cat, servalline benet, chimpanzee, yellow-backed duicker and giant forest hog.
Bird species include; Rwenzori turaco, barred long railed cuckoo, long eared owl, handsome francolin, cinnamon chested bee-eater, archer’s ground robin, white starred forest robin, Rwenzori Batais, Montane sooty Boubou, lagden’s bush shrike, slender billed starling, blue headed sunbird, golden headed sunbird, strange weaver, etc.
The park is cherished to be rich in botany, and is regarded to have the most beautiful plants in Africa. The plant species is distinct into five vegetation zones which change according to altitude.
Major tour activities
-Mountain hiking and climbing. This takes one through various vegetation zones and finally ends on the glacial peak.
-Nature walks, where one gets chance to look at different animals tree species.
-Birding, where different species of birds, some of which are endemic to the Albertain rift valley can be seen.
